Switzerland has already started to deliver mail by drone in a trial program. Full implementation across the country is expected within a few years.
The drones are completely autonomous and follow "clearly defined, secure flight paths, which are drawn up by cloud software developed by Matternet (the drone’s US manufacturer)” according to Swiss Post
For now this is just a trial as they need to test and refine various aspects such as battery life, and how they react in such a mountainous country.
For now, Swiss Post said it expected to mainly use the drones in emergency situations, which could “involve bringing supplies to an area that has been cut off from the outside world following a storm.”
“Another realistic possibility is the urgent transport of consignments with the highest priority, such as laboratory tests,” it added.
All going well the Swiss expect to have unmanned drones in wide use within 5 years.
